Zoey FrankZoey Frank’s paintings find their subjects in the familiar world of people, interiors, gatherings, and the objects of everyday life, yet they continually move beyond straightforward representation. Figures inhabit rooms, gather around tables, swim, converse, or simply share a space, creating scenes that feel observed and intimate without resolving into fixed narratives. Frank is interested not only in what a painting depicts, but in how an image can evolve through the act of painting itself. Elements are introduced, shifted, simplified, or removed, allowing traces of earlier decisions and different moments in time to remain embedded within the finished work. The result is a sense of lived experience — layered, changeable, and never entirely fixed. Rooted in a deep knowledge of classical figurative painting while remaining open to the possibilities of modernism, Frank’s work explores the tension between observation and invention, illusion and the physical reality of paint. Perspective may shift, figures can merge with their surroundings, and passages of careful description coexist with areas that remain loose, fragmented, or visibly constructed. Rather than allowing narrative or technical virtuosity to dominate, Frank keeps the painting itself at the centre of the experience. Her works reward sustained looking, gradually revealing relationships between people, objects, space, and time — and transforming ordinary moments into complex reflections on how we see, remember, and experience the world around us.
