This was the scene that was occurring more often in Slim's life. As he became sicker, he would drink more until his body would rebel and he would spit up blood for several days. He would quit drinking, sometimes for months, until his body seemed healed. Then he would go back to drinking. He was addicted to the stuff. The Hawaiian is weaving with 3 to 4 feet long leaves from the hala tree (padanus). The tree is sometimes called screw pine.
