Juha Sääski, Works on paper and oil paintings
This collection contains 17 mixed media works, painting + drawing (drawing charcoal and acrylic on paper) and 13 oil paintings. The contents are dealing with humans in contemporary world with the feeling of being safe and the feeling of vulnerability as well as contrasting the experience of the imminently threatening with that of positive everyday matters. In the world of dejecting and horrific incidents life must go on. Through the news-flood we are mentally living in the middle of catastrophies, even though we are, for the time being, physically safe. For expressing the paradoxal nature of human life Sääski is juxtaposing comical and naive elements to serious content. According to Charlie Chaplin: "Life is tragedy in close-up, but a comedy from distance". Juha Sääski´s paintings are visualisations of distanced views on our relationship to the media, our addiction to them and the confusion that they may create. Sääski is often using comedy, satire, parody, naive elements and cliches because they can make the painting more communicative. Juha Sääski´s aim in juxtaposing tragicomic, even contradictory issues and elements is to express the paradox of human existence and outline a portrait of the spirit of the age, however in the optimistic manner. It is easy to notice that Sääski is an incurable aesthetician which can also be seen as an expression of hope.
