Gisoo Kim
Artists: Gisoo Kim
Gisoo Kim’s work explores the relationship between photography, memory, and imagination, transforming familiar landscapes and fragments of reality into poetic, often surreal compositions. Using needle and thread, she cuts, rearranges, and stitches together photographic images of different places and situations, creating unexpected connections between scenes that may never have existed together. Rather than relying on digital manipulation or conventional collage techniques, Kim physically reconstructs her photographs, allowing separate moments and locations to merge into new visual realities. Like fragments of a dream, these images form imaginary landscapes in which boundaries between places, memories, and experiences gradually dissolve.
Thread becomes both a means of connection and an independent form of artistic expression. White and black lines, delicate stitches, points, and openings extend across the photographic surfaces, creating intricate structures and unexpected spatial relationships. The embroidery not only joins the images together but also introduces a new layer of drawing, texture, and depth, transforming the photograph from a flat representation into a richly layered visual object. Through this interplay of photography and stitching, Kim explores the fragile connections between nature, space, and human experience, creating works that move between reality and imagination, presence and memory.
