Ikebana Surrealistica - Doc. dr. Ema Mazrak, Art Historian
At the exhibition entitled Ikebana Surrealistica, author Boris Hodak presents his work as part of a thematically and conceptually rounded cycle. A total of 24 compositions made in the collage technique (combining photocollage and acrylic) represent a kind of continuation of previous research that is based on the synthetic principle of connecting the traditions of the Far East and Western culture. The artist's characteristic visual vocabulary, formed on the trail of the poetics of surrealism, dadaism and pop art, clearly reflects a critical approach in relation to the value criteria of today's society and the position of an individual trying to find his truth and meaning. In this case, this is firstly reflected in the choice of substrates for the exhibited collages in the form of ikebana - a traditional Japanese technique of arranging flowers, the original value of which is the spiritual content - the path to knowledge, that is, the relationship between heaven, earth and man. On such a base, purposefully selected, harmonious, linear and symbolic, a surreal world of fragments of the present, past and fiction in the most absurd combinations is created. The presented contents in the form of the grotesque were created as expressions of free thought, irrational and visionary, and in a veristic way in the most unexpected relationships. This kind of concept of contradiction also reflects the quality of disgust, i.e. it has features of both repulsion and attraction at the same time. Seemingly humorous and cheerful compositions of bright and harmonious colors, with convincing fantastic scenes on monochromatic backgrounds, contain deep reflections of the author who problematizes various issues related to the world around him. First of all, the issue of spiritual degeneration and dehumanization of humanity today stands out. The entire process, created by contrasting and synthesizing two different meaning iconographic models, implies the author's idea of harmonizing humanity.

Na izložbi pod nazivom Ikebana surrealistica autor Boris Hodak nam predstavlja svoj rad u okviru tematski i idejno zaokruženog ciklusa. Ukupno 24 kompozicije izvedene u tehnici kolaža (kombiniranje fotokolaža i akrilika) predstavljaju svojevrsni nastavak prethodnih istraživanja koja se fundiraju na sintetskom principu povezivanja tradicija Dalekog istoka i zapadne kulture. Karakterističan vizualni vokabular umjetnika, formiran na tragu poetika nadrealizma, dadaizma i pop arta, jasno zrcali kritički pristup u odnosu na vrijednosne kriterije društva u današnjici i položaja pojedinca koji pokušava naći svoju istinu i smisao. U ovom slučaju to se najprije ogleda u odabiru podloga izloženih kolaža u formi ikebane – tradicionalne japanske tehnike aranžiranja cvijeća, čija je izvorna vrijednost duhovnog sadržaja – puta prema spoznaji, odnosno odnosa neba, zemlje i čovjeka. Na takvoj osnovi, namjenski odabranoj, harmoničnoj, linearnoj i simboličkoj, pomalja se nadrealni svijet isječaka sadašnjosti, prošlosti i fikcije u najapsurdnijim kombinacijama. Prezentirani sadržaji u formi groteske nastali su kao izrazi slobodne misli, iracionalno i vizionarski, te na veristički način u najneočekivanijim suodnosima. Upravo ovakav koncept proturječnosti reflektira i kakvoću odvratnosti, tj. istodobno ima obilježja i odbojnosti i privlačnosti. Naizgled humoristične i vedre kompozicije svijetlog i harmoničnog kolorita, s uvjerljivim fantastičnim prizorima na monohromatskim pozadinama, u sebi sadrže duboka promišljanja autora koji problematizira različita pitanja vezana za svijet koji ga okružuje. Najprije se ističe pitanje duhovne degeneracije i dehumanizacije čovječanstva u današnjici. Cjelokupan proces, nastao putem kontrastiranja i sintetiziranja dvaju različitih značenjskih ikonografskih modela, implicira autorovu ideju harmonizacije čovječanstva. Univerzalnost konteksta naslikanih „poruka“ se ogleda i u referiranju na tradiciju i kulturu dalekog Japana, što je samo jedna od tema
